I got bored by Hollywood production, because their movies started too look all the same, so I often watch foreign movies. I have learned to love both European and Asian cinema because they offer something new, instead of superhero movies and shallow comedies which are lately coming from Holywood. Slam is a hidden gem, nicely paced, with a simple yet interesting story, beliveable acting, I enjoyed watching it with my friends.
As an Ali Bastian fan, I had to see this film. Especially because she won five or six Best Actress Awards for her role of Alice in this film. We see Ali going from beautiful (as she is) to a panicking actress trying to reach the top. At first I thought this would be a cliché film, but that changed after about 25 minutes when they start messing with the viewer's mind. I enjoyed this film and especially enjoyed Ali's acting. Also a bit compliment for Cally Lawrence. I've seen her in The Office years ago where she was great. In this film she is great again, and very funny.
I watch horror movies very often and honestly I got tired of the latest trend in horrors to be as bloody and gory as possible. If you want a great horror movie, with an intriguing story, superb acting and a nice ending with a twist, The Abandoned might be perfect for your late night watching. The scenery is spooky, there were some decent scares and I really liked Louisa Krause's performance. Jason Patric was good in his role, as expected, and there was a good chemistry between the two main actors. Sit back, relax and enjoy the movie and don't over-analyze it like some of the reviewers here. Overall, I was greatly entertained, and I hope I will see more from this director in the future.
