  • Ransom Canyon has tragedy, love, rodeo and ranching...and not once did it make me think of Yellowstone.

Ransom Canyon is a western drama held together by a couple of romances, some past drama, two feuding families and a large company trying to buy up water rites with the help of a lot of money.

If you need a western fix, this might be the series for you, between the day to day ranching, the rodeo riding, line dancing and western attire...you are sure to find something to scratch that itch.

The two feuding families in this small Texas town are the Kirklands and the Collins. The romances, which are pretty hot and steamy, are between Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel) and Qinn O'Grady (Minka Kelly), Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher) and Ellie Estevez (Marianly Tejada), and Lucas Russell (Garrett Wareing) and Lauren Brigman (Litzy Greene). I particularly enjoyed the Yancy-Ellie storyline as there seemed to be a lot of character growth on Yancy's part.

The series deals with a lot of grief, particularly on the part of Staten who has lost both his wife and shortly after, his teenage son. I really enjoyed the bonding moment between Lucas and Reid, and I particularly liked seeing Reid really step up and do the right thing. There are some pretty good bad guys in the series and chief amongst them is Paula Jo played by Meta Golding. Her character is a real piece of work. There are cons and con men, politicians and wannabe cowboys...all set in a beautiful backdrop with some great sets and costumes.

There is also a bit of a mystery as Staten doesn't believe his son's death was an accident and has forced the issue with the local sheriff Samuel Kirkland. One of my favorite characters in the series is Cap Fuller played by the seasoned veteran actor James Brolin, who like Staten is grieving his wife (she is in a care facility with dementia) and doesn't want to sell to the big money Water company.

There is some great horseback riding and I really loved Yancy's run at the all-around in the Rodeo. Great for a binge watch and definitely good for a western fix...it's the drama that will keep you tuning in. I'm excited for the next season as it looks like there might be a shift in power between Staten and his father. Also, I loved Yancy's speeches to both Ellie and Davis...I am dying to know about the mystery woman.

  • A very emotional story of love and growth that had me in tears.

Connie Britton plays a warm and loving mom in this film about both grief, loss and finding one's self. There were the most natural moments between mother Elizabeth Rose and her adult daughter Alex, played by Sofia Carson, especially after Alex finds out her mother's cancer is back.

Single mom and founder/CEO of Rose cosmetics dies, and at the reading of the will boy her boys get what they expect...but her daughter-in-law is put in charge of her company and not her daughter Alex. Alex is instead is fired from her mom's company and given a very personal mission. While doing some death cleaning, Elizabeth finds a list that her daughter wrote when she was thirteen. It was a list of her life goals, with items like be the best teacher, do stand up comedy on amateur night, read Moby Dick, get a tattoo, find her true love, make peace with her dad, etc. Elizabeth made a dvd explaining that she thinks her daughter is settling and playing it safe and she wants her to live and realize her potential. She explains that for every item on the list she checks off, she will get a new dvd of her mom with the ultimate red envelope containing her true inheritance if she completes them all before New Year's Eve.

This starts Alex on an interesting journey of self discovery.

I enjoyed the family members and Alex's interactions with them and everyone else she encounters. I appreciated her mom's four questions for knowing if your person is the one and I enjoyed two personal journeys...the one with her father and the one with her lawyer.

My favorite line in the film actually came from her eldest brother who pointed out how do you think their dad felt or the two brothers felt about the close bond (private club) between Alex and their mom. I really enjoyed that revelation because it is easy for people to get caught up in their own drama and not think about other's perspectives.

I loved her out of the box teaching and the highlight of a women's shelter. I guess you could say that there was a lot that I liked about this film. This is not a lighthearted film by any means, but I think fellow romantics will appreciate the love story and the self growth. The list is such a cute idea and getting to see the mom throughout the film via the dvds after her death really gave the film a lot of emotional impact (and you could say added the heart to the film).

I think this is a film I will be rewatching and that I can recommend especially to romantics.

  • I think Christopher Nolan has broken my husband and this is the film that did it.
