I don't understand the overly critical reviews of The Materialists. It shouldn't be compared to Past Lives, that was an arthouse film, while this is commercial. The Materialists stands on its own, with Celine Song's poetic and distinctive signature shining through in both style and themes. It's beautifully directed, smartly written, and filled with memorable characters. Song also dives into class difference and capitalism, while exploring what it means to long for a true connection, even unconditional love. What struck me most is how this rom-com resonates with our current time, where finding love feels unbearably difficult. The film left me reflecting and I think she did a wonderful job. And if we're going to compare, then let me say this: it may not be Past Lives, but it's every bit as unforgettable in its own way.
This film blows my mind. So inspiring, touching, absurd and especially so so original. Really love everything about this masterpiece.
What a great film... Proper laughs and tears <3 . Surprising good how big steps/processes were told in just one single shot... well done.
