  • Not a bad movie - a quite good movie, really

I don't know what people were expecting from a sequel. It makes sense as a movie and matches the first thematically. Not cinematically, perhaps. It may not be as fun of a movie, but it covers a less fun part of Arthur's life.

The songs worked. It doesn't feel like a musical, so I understand why the director and lead actors said it wasn't a musical before its release. The characters singing is part of the story itself, not part of the storytelling. The characters literally sing songs they know. It's not some avenue to have lyrics be part of the dialog.

Part of me feels like this movie is a response (from the director and lead actor) to so many calling for a sequel, and I completely respect that. Was a sequel needed? If you dislike this movie, then the movie answers that as a 'no' for you. For me, the sequel was still not needed, yet part of the merit of this film is that it is flipping off people who wanted something other than this. This is the sequel we deserved. It is still a good movie. It is not the first movie, it is its own movie, and that is on purpose. It is entirely realistic and believable. It stays true to the story of Arthur and the relevant themes from the first film.

So what's the problem? It's really not bad.

  • Great drama that breaks the mold

To be fair, I haven't seen many foreign films (I'm from the US), but this is something special, and not like too many other films I've seen.

Without spoiling anything, I will simply say that this is a film with a distinct and consistent style, which is very refreshingly different from most romance films. It is ultimately a very nice drama, and well told at that! Yes, it's a romance but it makes for an interesting watch even if the viewer was looking for an interesting drama.

The casting here is excellent, and I was struck by the captured realism depicted from the very first couple scenes, which merely depict the primary character as a regular person with a regular story. The story is character-focused, and it is quite satisfying to watch it all play out.

I can easily recommend this film to anyone.
