Hollywood has, in general, done pretty well by Tom Clancy. "Red October" tracked very close to the novel as did "Clear and Present Danger". "Patriot Games" didn't deviate too far nor did "Sum of All Fears". "Without Remorse", however, is an utter train wreck of a movie. The novel almost begged for big screen treatment but instead got something worthy of a student film. Not blaming the actors or directors but whoever "adapted" this novel should be taken before a virtual firing squad..What should have been a gripping movie with a poignant backstory turned into a mish-mash of pasted up action scenes with very little coherence. Hopefully somebody will, in the future, pick this up and do justice to the book. I shudder to think what the same screenwriter(s) will do to "Rainbow Six"!
I recently watched this for the fourth time trying desperately to see some redeeming factor in it to no avail. The L. Ron Hubbard book was a classic piece og golden age SciFi style but the movie is nothing short of awful. The alien look like refugees from a bad reggae band and the sets are so dark and depressing that much action is lost. This may have been John Travolta's effort to honor Scientology's founder(just my opinion) but he fell far short of doing that. What this is is a dismal not even grade B movie that is not worth 2 hours of your time..
If you are a fan of Strother Martin be sure to catch this episode if you get a chance. His portrayal of a small town chicken farmer seeking to right a wrong is absolutely classic. His distinctive voice and delivery make his character funny and believable at the same time. The transformation from comic chicken farmer to his courtroom performance is endearing. He is every man versus big business in a role that is a treat for his fans.
