The Moodys is a smartly written adult comedy that ended far too soon. I've always been a huge Dennis Leary fan, but this may be his best show ever. Impeccable casting and clever story lines make this the best scripted comedy I've seen in the last five years. It's a crime that Fox never really gave this show a chance. I think if Netflix featured The Moodys for a while it would quickly gain the same type of popularity that Schitt's Creek did a few years ago. I'm hoping against hope that FX, Netflix, or Hulu will come to their senses and renew this show like NBC did with Brooklyn 99. It's far too good a show to die after 14 episodes.
I gave this show a shot because I've always enjoyed Dennis Leary's shows (Rescue Me, The Job). While the pilot was a tad slow in places, episode 2 picked up nicely. By #3, I was laughing out loud. Not only is Leary terrific, the rest of the ensemble is hitting all the right notes. I eagerly await to see how the season develops. Throw a few f Bombs into the show and it could easily be at home on FX.
Please note that many of the negative reviews for The Alienist were made by those who had read the book, then watched the series. Rarely is this ever a good way to appreciate the film or television series on its own merit. I have not read the novel-yet-, but after watching season 1 it is now on my list. The Alienist is compelling television, and well worth your time. I'm eagerly awaiting Season 2.
