  • Perspective

I am not a baseball fan although I loosely know all the great teams are just by their natural presence on the various media platforms. Probably never sat through an entire game in any capacity. With that says you certainly know the grades and you certainly know the ones that were controversial because both transcend the sport itself. That's my perspective here.

Like so many others in baseball and other sports that got caught up in the performance-enhancing drug schemes of the day. I don't really care on a personal level. But as a human being looking for the good in people it is sad to see these superstars come crashing down. So many big names that are known even to the lackluster observer like myself.

With that said, the documentary itself provides a cool backstory to Alex and insider points of view from other big-name people which is entertaining. As far as documentaries go it does what it supposed to do it shows all the bad which is painful but shows how awkward he is in his own skin, shows the red hot celebrity spotlight and what money and fame can bring and also take from a person. Unlike many of us, he comes from a broken home with my father present. Many of us can relate to that. As a documentary it was entertaining from my perspective whether I care about him or not. Much like O. J. Simpson, I knew him as a football player back in the day but I never cared about him off the field at all and still found his story riveting. The documentary does its job. If you are a fan, you may have varying opinions. I'm unbiased, it does what it's supposed to do. Triumph and tragedy at its best.

  • Incredibly heart wrenching

One of the incredibly heartbreaking movies I've ever seen. A war move without ever firing a shot on screen. This is a very personal account of the cost of war at the most micro scale. A personal life- altering grief and loss felt by all associated with the deceased. The script words were minimal, but the facial expressions were a masterclass in showing deep, silent emotion. Bacon was amazing in his portrayal of a Marine caring for the deceased and questioning his own manhood and bravery as a Marine for not going to Iraq.

This is not a war movie in the traditional sense. The focus is the cost of war and the honor and dignity in which American service members are treated on their journey home and a senior Marine's struggle with essentially being on the sidelines during a major war. A must see!!!

  • Very good

This series was very good, but understand this is a microcosm of the Marine Corps and not definitive of every morning. This is a microcosm of non-combat Marines. I read people knocking these guys for wanting a war. Well, it is true they may live to regret that someday, but I certainly understand the need to actually go to the dance instead of just training for it all the time. As I said, war is an entirely different, heart, wrenching, ugly experience, in a no doubt, godforsaken place on the planet. But I do understand their naïve desire to walk the walk.

They did a good job at showing different types of people that are in the Marine Corps. Let's face it, the military is one of the most blended demographics you've ever seen from the entire spectrum of the socioeconomic scale. And as an any organization, there's a few people you would rather not be around, and those many that you would give your life for in combat.

Take it for what it is, it's not the be-all end-all, but it is trying to humanize military personnel, and Marines in particular. Carry out the mission of watching the series, conduct an after action, brief, and then move on.
