Billy Bob is perfect here and the story line is very interesting. I particularly like the role of his son, played by Jacob Lofland. It's a little hard to believe Billy Bob doesn't protect him more knowing what's out there, but the drama is riveting.
All that said, what on earth could anyone have been thinking with the characters of the daughter and ex-wife? It's a 360 degree turn from a very interesting series to how creepily weird it becomes in every single scene either one of them is in.
His daughter is seventeen? Sure, every seventeen year-old girl has the sexual experience this kid does. When did this junior in high school start having sex, the 7th grade? A definite PEDO vibe. How did this get written?
The bizarre continues with the character of Rebecca Falcone, a TWENTY-FOUR year-old lawyer, otherwise known as fresh out of law school. Sure Becca, you'd be everyone's representational choice in the brutal, gang-fueled world of Cartel vs/ Big Oil. Must be your pretty face. Maybe you can go one-on-one with the savage cartel guy. How ridiculous.
But who doesn't want more cringe? Becky joins grandpa Billy Bob for a drink because they have so much to talk about and how can she resist? What's a 40 year-old age difference? Hey, maybe Nathan will end up with the Billy's 17 year-old daughter. Why not? He's only got a year to wait before she can vote, and I'm guessing the age of consent in Texas is 12.

I love this series. Angela Bassett is in a class by herself here, but the other actors are so very good. I find myself teary how much I can relate to what some of them are going thru. A good amount of heart-pounding rescues, some with good outcomes, some not. The 'some not' are just gut-wrenching, both for the characters and the viewer.
I do wish they would follow-up on some of the stories, but I guess they figure the good news ending we all long for is unrealistic. Even so, I love how Buck wants to follow the victims/patients into the hospital to comfort them and be sure they are going to be OK. That's exactly how I would be. Lots of heartwarming interactions with the characters. You are going to love this. Binge worthy.

Just a wonderful movie, I wish so much they would make more like this. No make-up, no perfection, just two normal people like all of us, desperately seeking happiness, desperately seeking to belong. So heartbreaking at times, but so realistic. Each incur stinging humiliation in their quest to just belong somewhere, so deeply felt. Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson are just incredible here, as are the support cast, specifically, Kathy Baker and Eileen Atkins. The movie is about two people, who seemed to never fit into the dance of life. They find each other and now belong. So lovely. What acting! Watch til the very end....💕
The first 3/4+ of the film are surprisingly good. I expected to watch 5 minutes of it and turn it off, but the charm of the actors and much of the writing keeps the story worth watching. The key to it all is Dermot Mulroney.
What is interesting though, is that he is not all that great looking. But as soon as he speaks, as soon as his character begins, he becomes incredibly irresistible . He absorbs the role to the point where all women want to absorb him.
As usual, everyone's too perfect looking, always with their hair professionally done, blue/green eyes, etc. The setting is ridiculously rich and storybook. A some points I found myself rolling my eyes with all the perfection going on wondering 'do these people ever even use the bathroom?' Just very flowery, the whole setting has a kind of fairyland quality to it.
Deborah Messing is totally charming and perfectly cast. She plays the same character type in Along Came Polly, so you've seen it before. She has so much natural charisma, it's ridiculous, with a je ne sais quoi quality that few possess, even her facial expressions are hilarious.
Dermot Mulroney though, is on a different level. He has such a deep understanding of the part, such a believable, sultry confidence, combined with sensitivity and vulnerability. His character specializes in the ability to completely sense what woman wants and needs. It's not necessarily sex, and it is his understanding of this concept that makes his character so rich.
And ooo-la-la does he nail it. His hurt and sensitivity when she blacks out and doesn't even remember their night together on the boat is pitch perfect. When he dances with her, it is absolutely erotic.... yum yum. He's what keeps the movie so engaging. What a good actor. Makes me want to watch more of his movies.
The support cast is really good too. I can't think of a sour note. Funny, engaging, believable. Well cast.
So yeah, the movie was really good for the first 3/4+ of run time. Then the ending happened. Well, that's that. Way too silly and unrealistic, as if the writers and production company just lost interest. Too bad, Dermot and Deborah were capable of so much more..

This is a charming movie and could have been much better. Jane Fonda, of course, made it fabulous, both from an acting standpoint and just her very presence. She is amazing. Jeffery Dean Morgan stole every scene he was in, a really intelligent, kind actor. Catherine Keener is so perfectly cast, understated and vulnerable. Their relationship should have gotten more screen time and have been much more developed.
Marissa O'Donnell and Nat Wolff are both adorable here and their relationship together is very believable.
I did not like the role of Elizabeth Olsen. She is an interesting actress, but her dialogue and life experience seemed too mature for her and her relationship with the butcher felt beyond them. Their scenes together did not work and I found myself fast-forwarding through them the second time I watched it.
