The elevator scene with Klaatu and Helen, I believe is symbolic of a confessional booth used in religious context. In that scene Klaatu spills his beans to Helen. I think that the religious symbolism in the movie is very strong, but not meant to back the Christian point of view. The point is that if Jesus himself did come back today, he would be put down by many. Just seeing the movie for the first time the other day, I find it amazing that 50 something years later the movie is still amazingly contemporary and dead on with the way people are still on this Earth. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who has not seen it, and I was blown away of how much I enjoyed it. The music is really great too.
