First of all I LOVE Midsommer and Hereditary, so my opinion of Ari Aster was high going in. I also love Joaquin Phoenix for his ability to play uncomfortable, weirdo roles.
I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone with major anxiety, in fact I paused it a couple of times when my husband walked through. But for me the first hour was such a thrill. It was kind of set up to be a play with 3 or 4 acts - I'll have to watch it again for sure. Can't wait to find details I missed!
There was even a scene that went WAY over the top but I just had to laugh and said aloud, to myself, "I'll allow it" because somehow it fit with all the other bizarre happenings.
Great job, Ari. The cast was amazing, especially the random 2 minute (or less) appearances by big name actors.
