I was taken back by this movie! Having seen yhe Malcovitch/Sinese version many times. Tjis version in B/W took my breathe away! A shame it didn't win any major awards. I love the story, John Steinback really knew how to put humanity or the cruelest of it to pen. It's a must-see, if you appreciate fine acting at it's finest. It's also wonderful how Meredith & Chaney were relative unknown actors at the time of this filming. Both stars went on to bigger & better roles & $. Chaney went on to star in 2 major classic horror movies, Frankenstein & The Wolfman. I'm a Northern Californian, born & raised... now living in the CA Delta - off the Sacramento River. It was a beautiful place then - and it still is now, the nostalgia of this area was reflected beautifully.
We love TWD... but Maggie & Negan in NYC... meh. But this 1... what excellent writing!! The story of Laurent... is really compelling and Daryl is just amazing in the TWD series, so using him for this was an wonderful choice, he's just so good!! We're thoroughly enjoying this so much so far and Daryl is just such an amazing character. The back drop of a Parisian amagedon is exquisite and adds it's own creepy element. This series should certainly continue on it's own and hopefully it will. I think what helps this series is quite simply, there's hope here, despite what is seemingly a completely hopeless situation.
I can't emphasis how powerful this movie is. It's just very hard to convey it in words. It's very bleak... but it's also rich in narrative and character study. You love this Father/Priest... he's a good man who's endured a lot but despite of it - he gives so much to his parishioners. It offers a dark subject matter, the hypocrisy of the Catholic church and the sexual abuse of children that went on throughout the world for so many countless years. Was the church at fault? Of course it was, but do we also blame the innocent Catholics who continue to practice the religion despite it's heinous and repugnant past? It's a complicated. I'll admit - this movie made me weep, and will stay with me forever. It's that powerful. The acting was sublime and the cinematography gorgeous.
