  • Surprisingly well done

I thought this was one of the better executed grief based stories Hallmark has done. The male lead, Jack, loses his wife and takes his kids to her hometown to fix up her lighthouse as previously planned with his wife. It was confusing initially as Jack was the sick spouse in the beginning of the movie, while his wife took care of him. It took a bit for the explanation. I thought the couple and the potential new love interest gave great performances.

It was a tearjerker at times as the family started to heal as the summer progressed. The supporting characters were excellent also, although the daughter was a bit over done with the teen angst. The kind of plot point that annoys me about most Hallmark movies, and I felt it was unnecessary to bring in the usual "misunderstanding" romantic trope.

The family dynamics and healing process made romance take a back seat in the movie, but that was okay. There was a Christmas movie that where the deceased spouse was lost in action. In the end, he was miraculously alive and it was by far one of the worst Hallmark movie I'd ever seen. One Summer was excellent, even for a Hallmark movie.
