  • One of those "So bad, it's bad" shows

Thirty years ago, I would still probably haven given this 7 out of 10 stars. In the encyclopedia for "Late 70s television" (especially ABC) you would find a listing for Vega$. This show has everything you need for a 1970's television series, with the military veteran, hunky, do-it-all, dependable good guy lead with the usual supporting cast.

The hot, loyal, supposedly 'old' loyal female confident and their platonic relationship.

The non-white, streetwise savant muscle, also with unfailing loyalty.

The goofy comic relief, in this case a supposed former Wise Guy who couldnt collect lunch money let alone payoffs for the MOB, but we're supposed to believe he had mafia contacts.

The never ending rotation of lovely young ladies who have some history with our hero but we never see them more than once.

The never ending rotation of passed-their-prime quality actors who give solid performances despite their lines.

The usual tropes of seedy underworld nasties, helpful local law enforcement member always ready with the needed information at the right time, damsels in distress, connected boss with all the faith in our hero despite his constant ribbing. Throw in the Aaron Spelling renowned tire squeal that we know in our sleep used a few times in every episode.

But, I give this show 5 stars because of the location shooting and the fact that it doesnt try to be more than what it is. Vega$ is a product of it's time. If you like campy 70's tv, give this a watch. Not for everyone, but perfect for some.

  • Failed Suspension of Disbelief

Just got to watch this movie for the first time. I got the '70's Family Crusoe or one of those Swiss Family Robinson, Life and Times of Grizzly Adams vibes. I was never sure if it was a children's movie or not.

As someone who has spent time in harsh conditions that require training, conditioning and detailed planning, the entire premise that this guy gets dropped off in the middle of the place on earth other than the ocean, where you will die most quickly, and he has no plan, and didnt even consider why he was there baffled me. It was naively written as if expecting a last minute savior every fifteen minutes. Guess what? We got just that. I could not suspend my disbelief long enough to really get into the precarious existence in which the protagonist found himself. This is why figured it just had to be for kids, those still young enough to think this is how the world works.

Of course, the message of the film is wonderful and the cinematography is awing. The performances were good even is the characters were cartoony and predictable. I won't bash the 'magical negro' trope, which in this case was in the form of the Inuit characters because i realize that was a really common plot element in those days, it simply doesnt age well.

I know there are a lot of fans of this movie; i watched it based on the reviews. So, if you like nature films, certainly give this a watch.
