This seems to be a polarizing movie. Many see no redeeming reason for it. But that IS the point of it. A woman living in a depressing place, with no real way to easily fix her life. It is quite an adventure and is fun, depressing and crazy all at once. Great acting my all, a LOT of stuff happens to the lead actress, but its mostly somewhat believable. If you like gritty, depressing and something "different" this is it!
I watched this years ago as a child and had fond memories. I should have left it at that. It comes off as boring at times, dated at times, good at times, and silly at times. I mean this show is ALL over the place. The acting is Okay at times, but the 2 leads are relatively boring to watch. The earlier show "UFO" from Gerry Anderson is also dated, but oddly it holds up FAR better, is more fun to watch and just still has "Something" that makes it watchable. Space 1999, might have had some great ideas, but it seems like they can not bring it to screen well. To someone not familiar with it, doubt they could even watch it. TO me as a fan when younger, I just feel like I have matured far past this. Picture mediocre original era Star Trek, with bland acting and 70s fashions. 2nd Season went downhill from the first season for sure.
I came in expecting SO much more. I mean Ben Stiller, was just blah in this part, and it seemed so contrived, almost as much as the Golf Cart scene. It was so bland, and could not settle on being a Holiday movie/Comedy/Drama/Romance, but merely took bits of each and unsucessfully tried to meld those genre into something. I really did not feel convinced of ANYTHING in the movie at all, other than 4 boys could act "Bad", but even that was dropped part way into the movie. It was so bleack and blah, and his Porsche was the only BRIGHT thing about the movie!
Ben Stiller usually can be quite good, but this was one of his worst. The IDEA about foster care and so on, was partially taken seriously, then turned into a bit to get comedic scenes that were not funny. One of the worst "Holiday" themed movies of recent years. And oh by the way, they do the "Nutcracker" at the end......it just did NOT meld together and felt like a bunch of random stuff that some writer thought would work....
