I see that most people have not rated it well...but I loved the authenticity of the era depicted which is so often misrerpresented.
James Norton was brilliant and I loved the lead lady too...all in all to me it was a really good piece.
The story does stick to actual events and has been handled well. The acting is really good for all characters.

After a long long time I have watched a movie without looking at the time left.
And after a really long time a movie moved me to tears.
It's just so real...The feelings are absolutely raw, unfiltered or tainted by unnecessary drama. The children's fears are palpable and at times comic. Just goes to show that as human beings we often end up hurting the ones that love us the most. Yet it shouldn't upset us because we are all in the same boat. Amerigo could be any of us...without any change whatsoever. You do feel sorry for him at the end though.
Just reinforces my belief in the superiority of Italian movies <3.
