Beautiful cinematography. Wonderful set and time period accuracy. The writting and dialogue
are impeccable. By far Netflix's best original movie. But what really sets it apart is the acting. Joel Eggerton, Ben Mendhelson, Sean Harris, all exceptional. But Timothy Chalamet and Robert Pattinson hit it out of the park. While I previously had nothing against either of them, I never really held either of them in high regard. That is until after watching The King. Playing rival rulers of England and France, these two earned my highest respect in their art form. This is a drama with only a few battle scenes but those few they did have, were absolutely incredible.
The cinematography is top notch. The beautiful Japanese waters and landscapes make for an awe inspiring yet intimidating landscape. Being a stranger in a strange land is an impossible feeling to escape for the main character and you as the viewer. Shogun is also extremely historically accurate which is so refreshing. The world in the 17th century was becoming a smaller place with the English, Spanish, and Portuguese building massive fleets and sailing to every corner they can to spread their empires and of course Christianity. But of course which is the best sect of Christianity? Catholicism, Protestant? The Japanese lords will be thrown into these empires quarrels and every one will try to gain power for themselves.
It somehow just worse and worse as the movie went know. Absolutely horrendous writing and an extremely predictable plot. I can't imagine all the money spent on are what otherwise are outstanding actors; Sam Rockwell, Bryce Dallas Howard, Brian Cranston, Katherine O'hara, Sam Jackson, Henry Cavill. I mean Sam Rockwell is kne of my favorite actors and while he was the bit of saving grace, along with Katherine O'Hara, but not nearly enough to make this flick redeemable. I definitely get what they were trying to do but it felt so unoriginal and the level of "silly" they were going for just morphed into unbearably awkward and contrived chemistry.
