I don't mean the subject matter, but the photography. Not only was the photography dark, but the actors were also backlit in many scenes. It looked like someone had watched each scene and if it was almost bright enough, they put a lit sconce on the wall or a light on a table behind the actors, so they were harder to see. This show lists six directors, but none of them apparently wanted the audience to see their product.
Having gotten that complaint out, I have to say that it was a good show. It is a complicated story, but it generally made sense and had a lot of surprises in it. The acting and production values were good and it had a surprising amount of humor considering the subject matter.
You can see that the ending of the season had been set up to go another season, but the ending was satisfying enough, without annoying cliffhangers.
Too bad they made it so poorly lit.

They show is basically a period soap opera which uses some historical names and events. They don't adhere to the ages of the characters at the times of the events and even bring in magic. But the show has a good sense of humor and is fun. I especially liked the Catherine de Medici character.
Sci-fi isn't listed as one of the genres, but it is an important part of the story. There were a couple of good twists and as some of the other reviews mentioned, it is pretty dark. Good and concise limited series.
