lavaside-60237's rating
Definitely entertaining.
It keeps a pretty consistent flow of action so one doesn't get bored.
The premise talks about "2 families at war" - so I was really hoping for a show where both families were the focus, as that would have been new and interesting.
But instead it's basically 'Irish gangster Dallas'.
Outside of Tom Hardy's character - no one in this thing is likable.
Really hard to cheer for anything or anyone.
It's easier to sympathize with the antagonists than the protagonists.
Very odd choice, in that regard.
Normally you'd get 'just the light' or 'the light and dark'. This thing is 'just the dark' of everyone.
Never in my life have I met someone who is just plain evil. In this story, that's basically everyone.
The nuances and complexities of the human condition are nonexistent.
With that said, it might not be prime rib, but it's at least steak in a buffet of animal crackers.
We kind of have to take what we can get from the entertainment industry, at this point.

The 90s were by far the best decade of American cinema.
More remembered movies came out in any year of the 90s than other whole decades combined.
'92 was one of those years, and this one got lost in the blur.
A lot of it had to do with the fact that Kilmer had gotten to be known for methodically acting eccentric roles, and in this he just plays a normal character (think Johnny Depp in 'Public Enemies' after being everything from the Mad Hatter to Tonto to Jack Sparrow.) I think people felt let down by it.
But watching it over 30 years later, it still holds up, entertaining from beginning to end.
Also, I think the name of the movie is too cheesy for how good the actual flick is. I'm sure that kept people walking by it on the shelf at Blockbuster.

It's just plain boring.
Lots of talented actors - but the script and story are boring as heck.
It's got the noir feel, but it lacks the typical voice-over narration, which this movie proves is crucial to the formula.
Melanie Griffith is a talented actress, but her looks have faded by the time this was made.
Simply too old for the role.
Nolte feels like he got forced to make a movie he didn't really want to do.
Really, the only good thing about this picture is Jennifer Connely naked when she was thicker.
She may be the prettiest woman, regardless of age or size, to ever grace Hollywood cinema.
My grading system:
1-4 the various levels of bad.
5-6 the various levels of good for a one time watch.
7-10 the various level of so good it's rewatchable.
This is an easy 4.
Impossible to get through, but it was almost there.
