This must have been something to see on its release, colourful, decent story line, good SFX and a message. Diverse crew would have been pioneering for the time solidifying the message of cooperation and peace. Sets are wonderful as is the soundtrack and nothing is lost in translation. Representative of a certain era in history and captures it well! One thing I appreciate about the film, unlike films from the US on similar themes, there is no overdone sickly patriotism - in fact, besides the very quick glimpse of the roundal on the jet fighter's tail (which is the GDR diamond tri-colour) there is no other political hint in the film - refreshing!
Opens with too much swearing and apparently 'arty' shaky camera angles plus the location scouts seem to have found the worst parts of Melbourne - it doesn't let up. The overall impression is this is someone's vanity project and any sense of connection with the actors is difficult to find and the characters are hard to like. What could have been a love story with a gritty edge was spoiled by an apparent need to be 'street' and became an instant turn off. The second half is certainly better than the first but overall, just another expletive laden, trashy film to add to Australia's reputation of a 'once was' producer of quality films.
Could have been something but fails miserably. Hardly any funny moments and far too much swearing - even from the children. So many missed opportunities and all but one of the characters are totally dislikeable. Give it a miss.
