I followed this film from its first announcement to its release because we know Jordan Peele likes to spark a lot of curiosity with his projects. But I opted to wait a while before seeing it and finally felt like watching it tonight. For those that think this is a confusing film, it's really not if you understand the layers of what's happening - sports fan or not. It's a psychological spiral into madness of manipulation and control through confusion and sacrifice.
The cinematography is absolutely beautiful and the depiction of character spiral, sensory overload, and questionable visual art is what the film delivers. It's not horror but emphasizes elements of it behind gruesome physical and mental torture of a sport to achieve "greatness". It's an underworld of darkness that makes you recognize and question perception vs reality. Is this film perfect? No. Does it make a viewer question what's happening? Absolutely. But it's not a "bad" film. For some, it may be a one-time watch and that's it but it is a sinister story of mental and physical abuse fueled by ego and an inability to let go of the very thing that consumes the mind - control.
So for those that rated this film low, I think just didn't understand it. Take for example, Jordan Peele's NOPE (2022), which has sort of similar roots to this film - a dark spiral into chaos for "spectacle". Simply put , it's football Picasso.
