Skinner, the happiness pill maker whom they hunt, has a Zen book in his house. That is the important hint, as Zen is the school that overcomes the main flaw of traditional Buddhist teaching, i.e. To overcome and end all suffering. Lazaro shows how indifferent that can make people and how necessary even physical pain can be. It's a great metaphor, animated so well, and look who is on board for choreographing fight scenes and providing the soundtrack, some of the finest artists in their fields.
The movie is interspersed by haiku. From the start, it is rather unusual for western eyes. Please give it a try at the Criterion Channel.
