One of the bad things that can happen to film is if it does not know what it is, is it gory front film or is it about the last days of WW1 negotiations. You can't have both.
One of the bad things that can happen to film is to overpressure it with your political views, so much that can harm it.
Is it fair to compare this one with the previous version? That one is possibly the best WW1 film, and the best of all war films to show the complete path of one individual from innocent youth until the death of experienced veteran just around the end of the war.
Nazis banned the book and the first film because they thought it corrupted German youth. The West is now all geared up, marschiert wieder nach Russland, pardon, marching on Russia once more. Yet, we have this antiwar film, no bans.
Seems anachronistic, when we're hearing louder and louder the drums of the new war which will be more horrible than all other wars put together.

Not bad, but I'd rather watch documentary about HOW they imagined these long gone animals to life. CGI has gone a long way towards reality, in 5 years, more or less, we'll be unable do distinguish real from fake.
As someone who remembers how it was to live in a communist country, viewing relationships between classes of people in this film was incredibly unconvincing. You can't transplant western police and secret police, like NYPD and CIA, into communist country and expect it to work. In a communist country militia was a god to ordinary people, and secret police was a god to militia.
