The only Carry On to star Ted Ray is much more benign than usual, the affection of his pupils motivating much of their mischief.
The film also contains a pair of fine romances between Kenneth Connor & Rosalind Knight and Leslie Philips & Joan Sims; the latter allowed a more robust personality than usual.
While Charles Hawtrey as the music teacher gets the chance to proudly conduct his own composition at the school concert.

The film that ended Peter Sellars' film career with a whimper rather than a bang like most of of his later vehicles sounds a lot more fun than it actually is.
Due to Sellars' increasingly notorious interest solely in his own part and complete lack of concern for the film itself - and despite superior production values, including production design by Alexander Trauner, and flanked by a cast of familiar faces, and with a classy leading lady in the sumptuous form of Helen Mirren - the film now resides in deserved obscurity.

Billy Wilder's films often drew upon his memories of the 1920s at a time when he was working as a young reporter.
This is particularly evident in this - his most uncompromisingly cynical attack on yellow journalism - based on the Floyd Collins case; explicitly mentioned by Kirk Douglas in the film itself.
Heaven knows what sherif Ray Teal feeding his pet rattlesnake chewing gum symbolises, but it's certainly a potent image.
