Tariq Bhat is an Indian film director, producer, and screenplay writer from Kashmir, known for his contributions to Bollywood cinema. Born on March 15, 1979, in Sopore, Jammu and Kashmir, he is recognized as one of the few Kashmiri filmmakers to make a mark in the Indian film industry. Bhat is celebrated for his efforts to portray Kashmir and its people in a positive light, diverging from stereotypical narratives often seen in mainstream cinema.
He debuted as a director with the film Zindagi Tumse in 2019, a woman-centric movie addressing social issues like the treatment of the elderly in Indian families. The film earned him accolades, including two awards from four nominations, such as a Radio Mirchi Award. His most notable work is Welcome to Kashmir, released in 2023, which became the first Kashmiri-produced Bollywood film to be screened in Kashmir's cinemas in over 35 years. This film, which he also produced, highlights issues like women's empowerment, drug addiction among youth.
