  • Good, but could be better

    ***6 episodes into season 1***

First off, I read and own the first 17 Alex Cross books, all first edition hardcovers. This character and the world Patterson created was my go-to for fictional entertainment for years. I've reread all 17 at least twice and I reread Along Came a Spider every time I go on vacation.

This series is decent, but imo, could be a lot better.

What the series absolute nails is the family dynamic between Alex, his kids, Nana Mama and Sampson. This was something very much lacking in the amazing adaptation of Kiss the Girls with Morgan Freeman. (The less said about Along came a Spider the better)

I've seen that the show runner has said they are creating new stories in the world of Cross and that's just not something I want.

Even if the series loosely adapts the books, while injection new stories and ideas, I would prefer that over completely new stories and villains.

I got excited every time Gary Soneji was name dropped in the show, but my excitement was immediately followed with disappointment that we won't see such a rich and psychologically twisted villain brought to life on the small screen. (The movie failed him as well)

The Alex Cross series has so many great villains, it's just a shame they won't get realized on screen.

The casting for the show is top tier.

Alex, Sampson and his family are perfectly cast and Hodge is probably the best version of Alex we've seen on screen.

The tired trope of the cranky Chief wanting to steer the narrative of a case is boring and very, very overplayed.

I THINK I'll watch season 2, but if it doesn't lean into the books a bit more, I think I'll just enjoy rereading the books.

  • Excellent for young kids

Pay no attention to the other reviews, they clearly didn't really watch the show. My 5 and 3 year old love this show and after every episode we've ask the kids what they learned and every time the kids learned (at least) one thing from every story.

    It's fun, bright and educational.

Season 3 really leans into the wackiness that was Dr Seuss, but still maintains its educational achievements.

The fact that the Cat is voiced by fellow Canadian is an added bonus.

The hour long Halloween and Christmas specials are good as well. Fun and still educational.

Can't recommend this enough to families with young kids.

  • Season 2 off to a better start

Although I was just happy to have Frasier back, I couldn't deny season 1 took more cues from shows like The Big Bang Theory than the original series. Although I liked season 1, I didn't love it.

This new version felt very much like a modern day Multicam sitcom and less like a stage play that just happened to be filmed for tv.

However, season 2 (so far) has toned down the cheesy sitcom tone and performances and feels a bit more in line with the original series and is a noticeable improvement over season 1. The character performances from David, Finch and Moose felt very out of place in the world of (OG) Frasier in the first season, but now that they've course corrected or settled into their roles (or both) they seem to fit in more comfortably with the original series tone.

Here's hoping they continue to lean more into the tone of the original series.

And for the love of God, do whatever they have to do and bring back Niles.
