An engaging combination of Jude Law, Jason Bateman and underground finance in New York City. While the series employs flashbacks and callbacks, they are well placed and memorable. I found Bateman's trampy costumes and makeup a little too much like the Geico Caveman, but the energy he expends keeps the plot hot. Law carries the essence of the stressed-out entrepreneur perfectly. The sets and videography are great (maybe a bit dark). All in all, an absorbing production.
After watching the pilot, my first thought was whether the writing, direction and production could sustain the clever, colorful, violent standard they'd set. Then I was floored by the brilliant first ten minutes or so of the second episode: danger, suspense, creativity and fast action. Ethen Hawke, Keith David are Kyle MacLachlan are terrific in presenting a mix of mystery, evil, odd characters (Hawke!) that's mightily engaging.
If you sit through all episodes, there are a few violent scenes for fans of violence. There are a few steamy scenes for fans of sex. There are strained family ties for soap opera purposes. And for boat lovers, you'll find on-water action. Aside from that, the six episodes plod along a plot that is one the one hand, trite: Rich resort family runs aground and turns to crime. On the other hand, crime fighting in the town appears inconceivably dense and crime commission by the family seems incredibly stupid. To be fair, the story improves in the last couple of episodes and the acting by the patriarch and prime villain is pretty good. If you can't find anything to watch.
