This is one of the greatest animal movies ever. As a kid it was fun and entertaining, but everytime I watch it as an adult it's overwhelming with emotional tears of sadness and joy. I suspect low ratings probably come from the fact that being 1993, the animals speech is voiceover rather than moving their mouths through special effects, but I think it's more genuine this way, because the interaction between the humans and animals isn't manipulated. If you're a pet lover, and especially dog owner, then this movie will make you appreciate your dog much more. Other movies that have the same effect are things like Marley and Me, or Hachi.
This movie started like a suspenseful, monster movie. However, later into the movie the focus becomes less on the monsters. It really seemed much more compelling than something like The Birdbox until the later part. Also, much like The Birdbox the viewer never gets a real conclusion, and is left with a fairly anticlimactic ending. I would say most people curious about the movie should avoid watching it, because they will be disappointed with the end.
