I could never get into this as a kid, despite being well into sci-fi along with most of my childhood friends. The animation was completely different to what I was used to watching. Obviously its early manga but at the time I had no idea of that or even that this series was from Japan. It was just different a bit like how Star Trek movies were different to Star Wars movies in those days. Geeks preferred Star Trek.
I had completely forgotten about this series until I bought a record by Daft Punk, the electronic music duo who used similar type characterisations on one of their releases called 'Harder Better Faster Stronger' in about year 2000. In recent years I was trying to remember the name of this series. I finally had to search online to get the answer. In the UK I think the show was called G Force, not Battle of the Planets. As kids it was referred to as G Force I seem to remember.
Reasons why could not get into it was the different animation and storytelling style and the characters which I did not like, especially that nerd of a kid one. Also their kind of ranking. The white one was the leader and cool, the blue one wanted to be like the white one, the green one was the forgotten one and the girl was mates with the nerd kid one. I also noticed but could never understand why each character's visors were different shapes and would often change shape in different scenes.
I seem to remember that they would all join forces to form a firebird vessel or something like that.
