dislocatedego's rating
If your a D&D fan- you'll enjoy this flick. The 1 and 2 ratings are lame- this is a legit 6-7 film, especially if you're a fantasy/sci fi nerd like me. This gives off just enough decent CGI and effects to allow me to suspend disbelief and go with it. Some cool sorcerer action and even a bag of holding show up. The. Barry Aird as Bezz, a Vermin Lord was particularly entetertaining and well acted. Also, enjoyed the tomb scene and thought the ending artwork and jeweled foreheads made for a good imaginary sorcerer look. The DVD, a German release, is becoming harder and harder to find- I was fortunate to find an affordable copy. I'd recommend this to any fantasy lovers out there that aren't expecting LOTR production values and are content with it.
Id rate this a hard seven and upwards strictly on originality alone, but it was a very entertaining film on its own merits. I mean, I just watched the newest iteration/reguritation of Alien and I enjoyed this film far, far more on an iota of budget. As brutal as it was, it was filmed in a way that didnt trend toward overkill- pun intended. I guess when ultimate survival is at stake, or the perception of it on the screen, than it becomes almost acceptable to throw away inhibitions and look past the carnage as a given. Kinda what the film was trying to display and the humanity to reverse engineer easy convenience to ultimate sacrifice for the greater good Also, people keep talking about the supposed bad ending, but I thought it was perfect on that note. This is the kinda smart sci fi Disney could only dream of doing.
I'd give this film a 6.5- 7. First off, Jennifer Lopez isnt that bad. Was she perfect, no...there was some overracting and there was some whining involved, but she did pretty well in a pretty tough role trying to act tough while being mentally flawed/scarred from the past. She did a decent job and pulled it off. The CGI is great all the way around from the cyberpunk aspects to the alien world and they even had some brief, beautiful space scenes which Im a sucker for. There was the l. Dock mission breakdown that was reminiscent of Aliens, but I actually got a chuckle out of the similarity. The Avatar look of Smith, too. Only wish we could've gotten a space battle to finish it up. If you're looking for some sci fi eye candy and action- give it a shot.
