I'm coming at this 36 years after first seeing it. Broadcast on UK TV in 1979 in two 90 minute episodes. For me it's not lost any if it's punch unlike many who seem to think it's too drawn out and boring. Times have changed and we're far to used to getting action and effects ahead if story and characters. There are many stand out performances and investing time to watch the full version and not the disjointed edited movie are worth your time.
Yes it's a TV movie/2 part series but it's a very very good one. Tobe Hooper's ditection and the soundtrack both add to the overall effect.
One I'd recommend if you don't have a short attention span and like plot and character development at a slower pace than of recent fashion.

This here is the nearest America has come to a Carry on film
An ensemble cast of well known stars in Carry on Racing!
Watching through todays eyes the drink driving, kidnapping, sexism etc comes across as dated and hasn't aged well.
Having seen it at the cinema when it was first released I have more rounded view of the time in which it was made.
It's a little bit disjointed and the script is fairly weak although not as weak as the sequel.
All in all if you take it for what it is a time capsule of a time long gone when having fun wasn't so seriously scrutinised and considered less offensive.
