Lots of reviewers seem to be jaded in that this movie requires several viewings to fully grasp the evolution of the central character as his psyche is subject to sustained attack.
It isn't a shallow movie about gore and thrill kills. It's a psychological thriller that questions humanity, human nature and desire. Western classism also plays a role for additional layer of subtext.
Further viewings can allow us to dissect different characters and explore the many meandering archetypes.
Graphic gore is pretty common in modern movies, but from a psychological standpoint, it serves the purpose of jolting the viewer into the moment.
