This show is so good. It's stupid, yes, sure. It is campy to the point of being cheesy. Very simplistic. Yet it is so wholesome, sweet, and funny. Every single character is so good. Giorgio, especially, has me cracking up whenever he opens his mouth. I want to live in this place. I love how everyone is up in everyone's business in a positive way, supporting each other in their pursuit of these preposterous dreams. My boyfriend teases me for this one, because it IS stupid - but it's the best kind of stupid. I see myself rewatching it a lot in the future. It's light, happy, easy - but truly engrossing.
I feel like people reviewing this with fewer stars just do not get it, which is fine. This is an over the top, campy AF twist on the ensemble dramedy series that has been all the rage in recent years. I get that camp is not for everyone, but I am still surprised by how low the rating is!
The story is good, and I think speaks beautifully to the experience of wanting to rise, to be accepted, and to belong. With deep layers! The characters, across the board, are delightful. I don't think there is a single character or acting I didn't appreciate in this show.
Kristin Wiig is straight up channeling Reese Witherspoon (somewhere between legally blonde and sweet home Alabama) and Josh Lucas was SO not what you expect of him, the combination was so funny. I would have never ever thought this role made sense for her but she was SO GOOD and I love how unexpected it was, out of the norm. Her mannerisms and facial expressions were spot on for the role and it was incredible to watch. Allison Janney is one of my all time favorites, and of course she was excellent here. But RICKY MARTIN 😂😂 I did not see him coming, totally did not expect to love him so much. HE WAS FANTASTIC. The aesthetics are beautiful, to top it all off - cinematography, color, sets, costumes - all of it is spectacular.
