Whilst I can accept the anthropomorphising of animals in an animation, when you put it in a "live action" framework there's something deeply wrong about it. Life on the African plains isn't one of Happy Families threatened by a nasty white lion. Then there's the matter of the warthog and meerkat. It feels like they've been shoehorned in just for the sake of it. The "humour" is dire, and in fact most of the script sounds like it was written by a slow-witted 9-year-old. Couple of the songs aren't too bad but generally they're a disappointment. Overall it's a weak effort and I can't help thinking that they haven't got a handle on who they're aiming at.
A poor effort. The whole point of Paddington is that he's in London. There's a clue in the name which the producers of this garbage clearly missed. It fell flat in every way it could. The characters individually felt tired and without spark. Emily Mortimer doesn't cut it as Mrs Brown - not feisty enough. Julie Waters is as much a fish out of water as Paddington. The kids might as well not have been there. The "action" sequences were watered down versions of what we've seen before dozens of times. (Imagine something that makes Jungle Cruise look sophisticated and innovative). Just one laugh in the whole movie. Dreadful.
I've been trying to write a review but I'm giving up because it was all just too boring. I didn't care about any of the characters; the plot went nowhere and (probably not much anyone could have done about this but) a Greek island cliche was an almost immediate turn-off for me.
