  • Uncredited Remake

The reason why this movie isn't half bad it's because it is an uncredited remake of the 1989 movie, Dance of the Damned.

It's a nearly word for word to the other script without credit to the very talented writers who created its very original plot.

Still, this version is easier to find, which is one point in its favor.

  • A little slow but a beautifully filmed fable

Yes, or was a little slow at the beginning but it is meant to be contemplative.

More importantly it was beautifully filmed: the kind of movie you might get if a cinematographer with a background in still photography wrote and directed his own film (I think that that IS literally what it was).

Excellent use of color filming to tell an artist's living journey, interspersed with short black and white filming for when he finds a profound moment, following a dream of 10 still photos that are trying to capture those moments.

Really, I just wanted to see it because Maggie Gyllenhaal was in it as a type of manic-pixie-dream-girl side character; she did not disappoint.

Also, it was a bit of a love letter to the beauty of New York (Manhattan? I don't know New York) underneath all the grime.

(The main character is literally digging through a dumpster full of garbage looking for a single photograph to keep).

Also, it reminded me of another movie, 200 Cigarettes: this story is about quirky characters on a quest across the city, where the journey itself was the experience all along.

  • A Decent (Indecent?) Gritty Western

    It's certainly not for everyone.

Low budget, bloody, dark, and disturbing. Although, the blood was exaggerated and cartoonish like a comic book movie.

The costumes were dirty and and lived in. The houses/sets looked like real shacks. Everybody and everything looked legitimately dusty, sweaty, and lived in. Living in the Southwest you get to realizing that nothing is ever clean.

The blood might put off some older folks, but I think that this is pretty normal for an independent film in our post Terintino, made-for-cable world.

The cinematography was surprisingly good. The editing was tight. Well directed, edited, and acted.

There were even a couple pretty songs. I kinda wish that they had leaned in to that a little more, but that might have made it too cheesy, so maybe not.

Sort of a modern Treasure of Sierra Modre. The literal bloody money bags were almost too heavy handed.

Also, that's Clint Eastwood's real life granddaughter as the main young woman. Her mother (his daughter) was even in it (but not as her mother).
