A wealthy family, including 4 teen cousins and 3 unhappy moms, spend their summers on an island off of Martha's Vineyard. All 3 moms are played by successful, talented actors. David Morse is a cranky, slightly unbalanced head of this family dynasty. The primary protagonist is a teen that suffered a trauma she has blocked all memory of. She is determined to remember what happened to her that left her alone on a beach, near death. The first episode moves at a relaxed pace that impatient folks might consider "slow", The moms are definitely the best actors, but no one is terrible, so I'm not sure what some of these other reviewers are going on about.
Cathy Bates delivers her standard strong performance as a long since retired lawyer that wants to get back to work for important reasons that I won't ruin for you. She plays well off of 2 very junior lawyers that she's been off handedly teamed with to prove she still has what it takes, after a 10 year break from legal work. Don't give up without watching the ENTIRE first episode. There's an important reveal in the last 30 seconds. She's more than a "sweet, little old lady". I suspect a great deal of the negative reviews are from people who hate seeing a gray haired female lead and a black female co-star. Sexism, racism, that stuff has no place on IMDB. I recommend this show and look forward to more of Cathy Bates.
This is a mystery, about a woman desperately trying to figure out why her loving husband disappeared, while looking after her angry teen step-daughter. So you aren't going to have explosions and gun fights every other minute. Keeping that in mind, the pace is well timed and the wife's confusion and distress is realistic. The main characters are talented actors and the writing is solid. My husband and I both thoroughly enjoyed the first two episodes, so rest assured this is not a "chick flick". It's great to see Jennifer Garner back in a dramatic role that's bound to have exciting twists and danger.
