A lack of self-awareness is a comedic focus that never gets old. American Society of the Magical Negro is a funny and thoughtful reminder of this fact from beginning to end.
While also forcing the characters to examine themselves and eventually come to terms with how they've adapted to everything around them, it also acknowledges that change is not easy. Partly because of denial, or just because it takes time, we're not ready to consider why we react the way we do.
Ultimately, the movie points out blindspots that people have and does a nice job of allowing the characters to move on from them. It achieves this, even while knowing that some of the audience who watch the movie will never acknowledge their own blindspots and will even take offense to those pointed out in the movie.
