While the English language dubbing could have been done much better this is, in general, a good contemporary Ukrainian-made film, based on the true story of Ukrainian nationalist resistance inside the Soviet concentration camp system known as the GULAG. The main character, a captured member of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) leads a successful revolt against the brutal camp commandant and his minions - this is a gritty film indeed but well worth seeing and is now available on Amazon Prime. Recommended.
Here is my review of Bitter Harvest, published in The Globe and Mail (3 March 2017): www.the globe and mail.com/arts/film/buried-history-of-Ukrainian-famine-finally-told- in-film-bitterharvest/article34183392/
Although not without some problems this film does a good job of introducing the difficult subject of the genocidal Great Famine of 1932-33 in Soviet Ukraine (the Holodomor) to a general audience.
