Just what is this? Only the Boston scenery is saving this, and our tendency for nostalgia of the 80s.
Plot setup is actually pretty decent. I like the voiceovers, very noir. Love the Boston scenery.
But: Overfilled with the lovebirds story. Hawk's role - I don't know where to start - so confusing. And the whole wholesome play on tough-guy Spenser deciding who's worthy of trial and who isn't, giving moral lessons to others... Please.
I feel like this was something that had potential, and they knew it but didn't do it right.

So bad. Disgrace to the potential of Statham in this kind of movies. Oh brother, you want these reviews to be really long now, don't you? Well, weakest premises ever for a vengeant rampage, extremely unrealistic action making police, FBI, and all the likes look stupid while main character is amazingly brilliant. Controversially confusing purpose of the Verona Parker character. Unrealistic premises of how she is involved in the entire story from two different angles. The methods Statham uses to reach his annoyingly weakly motivated goal are also controversial - it's not clear whether he really kills or anyway injures innocent people (obviously potentially fatally). Almost turns into the villain himself thanks to the AWFUL writing.
Sets off really well and faithful to the book. I like the narrative style, too. Bleichert and Blanchard have been cast wonderfully. Unfortunately, the movie proceeds to speed things up clumsily while trying to preserve much of the story and the dialogue from the book, which feels often surreal. At the same time, valuable plot points, character motivations and sub-plots are lost from the novel, causing the first-viewer a lot of confusion.
As they always say, the book is better than the movie, and this is no exception. I can imagine that for somebody who hasn't read the book this movie might disappoint even more.
