  • I never give 10's...until now

I knew the singing episode was coming. ST: SNW had already won me over -- I've enjoyed every episode so far. The prospect of a singing Enterprise crew left me more curious rather than fearful. This turned out to be the episode I most enjoyed. Being a musician and lover of theater, I was blown away by the realization of how much work went into this episode, both dramatically and musically. I was left smiling and in awe, and I will probably watch it again and again. Songs are lip-sync'd, which was performed at least as well as many high-priced musical movies. Song styles were varied. This episode would fare well on the stage. The premise of the episode was a bit out there as compared to previous episodes. So what.

  • Love it!

September 8, 1966 -- I was packing to leave for college the next day. Star Trek was on TV, which I watched over my shoulder. My impression was "it'll go nowhere." Here we are almost 60 years later and I've been glued to Strange New Worlds. I believe this is, by far, the best Star Trek series ever produced. First, after 12 different series comprising 943 episodes and 50 seasons, writers have so much to work with, and it is clever how they weave in a post history, all of which comes in the future. Each character is complex, human, and likeable, with the possible exception of Lt. JT Kirk. I think that is because William Shatner so poisoned the role it's impossible to separate Paul Wesley's portrayal from what has been burned into our subconsciousness as how Kirk is supposed to act. Maybe in time he'll grow on me. I'm also amazed at how much this "new old" Spock sounds like Leonard Nimoy. I do wonder how many times Ethan Peck watched the original series to get the inflections down. It is also refreshing to see him battle his human tendencies. Usually, it takes a final episode of a franchise to glue together all the pieces. In Strange New Worlds, we get to see all the pieces assembled before they begin to splinter into the elements found in all the other spinoffs. Every episode I've watched thus far has been a treat.
