It just doesn't make sense. The contrivance is flimsy, the rules of the universe are ignored, the implications of the technology are terrifying, and the actual mystery is just... lame. And it's something weve seen dozen times already. The rehash of Dixon Hill feels like they asked an AI to write a holodeck episode. We have so few episodes with these amazing characters, it's a shame to waste our time with this nostalgia wank.
Considering the crimes Jeffery Jones was arrested for, having a children's choir sing at his character's funeral seemed in poor taste. They left this guy out of the movie specifically because of his crimes, and nobody caught this? The rest of the movie is fine, especially when you consider they wrote it all using only one hand. If nostalgia gets you excited, you'll love this. If you actually wanted a good or entertaining story, just watch the first Beetlejuice again and save yourself the rental fee. The story has no purpose, nobody really wants anything, and it all wraps up without any difficulty or effort on anyone's part. It's a transparent attempt to squeeze money from nostalgia, and not a very good one.
Pom Klementieff is given more screen time in this special than in all her other MCU appearances combined, and she makes Mantis the perfect point of view character for this Christmas special. She is both hilarious and heart-warming as she struggles to give Peter Quill the perfect Christmas, and her sincerity and chaotic energy are what carries this story. As alien abduction stories go, this one was pretty funny, and surprisingly touching. It still had all the corny Christmas special elements you'd expect - absurd musical numbers, references to old movies, and everyone learning the true meaning of American Christmas - getting presents. If they made another one next year, I'd watch it.
