  • Excellent, Thought Provoking Film

I just saw this at the Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival. Thanks to Morehouse for sponsoring this wonderful film festival. I urge everyone in the area to attend or to avail themselves of the opportunity to stream the important films offered through this festival.

Honor Student deals with the difficult subject of gun violence in our schools, but eschews using a lot of graphic violence to do this. It is a film of ideas and gives you complex, but unique characters that are carefully developed and provide you with a different perspectives on this serious subject.

The actors are excellent. Kelley Jenrette is just amazingly and so is Hudson Yang (yes, the kid from Fresh Off The Boat). Very strong performances from both and not the expected casting decisions for these parts.

Ms. Miller is an extremely gifted director and I can't wait to see more of her work. Her pacing and camera angle choices are compelling and make for an excellent and exciting film.

  • Funny, Complicated, Made Me Cry

This was just a beautiful, funny, complicated film that will ultimately tug at your heartstrings. I just can't say much without spoiling the film, but know that if you take the time to see and savor this film, you will not soon forget it. I mean, how can you not be taken in by a film that starts with a corvette falling out of the sky? There are many comic moments, but this is definitely not a comedy.

Life is complicated, often hard and exploring it is never easy. This film does a good job of reminding us of that, as we all start to power down.

I thought all of the actors did an exceptional job, and I loved the little tidbits of science scatered in. Just a lovely little film!

  • Joy Ride? Yes it is!

I'm certainty not the demographic this film was intended for (72 year old, White, Southern woman), but I loved it! It's so delightfully inappropriate and fun. I also learned something about the cultural challenges/discrimination experience by individuals of Asian heritage, a subject I have little personal experience with.

The actors were unfamiliar to me, but did a wonderful job and I can't believe that this is the director's first film. I can't wait to see her next one. So if you're looking at this film and thinking - no, not for me - ignore that thought and just go have a good time!

It's wonderful to see actors and directors of Asian heritage finally getting the chance they deserve to produce a variety of films. This film lead me to 2 others that also deal with issues related to Asian heritage - Past Lives and Shortcomings. I believe that these 3 films will all make it onto my list of favorites for the year.
