Went in expecting a romantic thriller of some kind and was pleasantly surprised. The story is standard horror gaming fare mixed with a shallow tale about love, but the visuals are strong and the acting is okay. A bit too long perhaps, especially with the ending being very generic. All in all though, entertaining.
The acting is adequate and the cinematography is decent, but... From the very beginning, the writing is absolutely terrible. Every supporting character is annoying and Marcella herself is an unlikeable, dumb and crazy plot device. The cases are contrived, overly dramatic and the investigators -Marcella included- seem to be as inept as they come. Not a single person in the series is remotely interesting or sympathetic. Unfortunately my better half seems to like the series enough to put me through another season of some of the worst British television has to offer. In short, this is wannabe edgy bull.
The premise is interesting, the visuals are cool. So the first season was tolerable. The rest is just... bad.
The story barely develops and when it does, it has no clear direction. The characters are all incredibly dumb and basically just interchangeable plot devices spouting some of the cringiest soap series dialogues ever.
It is essentially the same poorly written muck as Lost, just with more of a horror vibe and an even more annoying, less charismatic cast.
If you like vague nonsense and have a high tolerance for irritating interactions, then give it a try. Otherwise, wait until the series has concluded and see if it ever amounts to anything.
