Good suspense and interesting drama for 4 episodes, but unsatisfying, dumb and ill-considered conclusion. The ending feels lazy and far to easy.
Also sort of a rip-off.

Nor is the cartoon the 'original'. The cartoon and this live action-movie, are two seperate interpretations of the 1.700 years old legend of Hua Mulan. So stop wishing for this to be a remake of the cartoon, because it's not.
By not being a remake, we are spared from the talking dragon, the songs and the profoundly stupid romance. Instead this one delivers beautiful cinematography and action-sequences made for an adult audience (people actually dies on screen in this one).
It's certainly not the masterpiece of the century, but it is no way as bad, as the reviewers in here wants you to think it is.
Judge it on its own premises, and stop wanting it to be a remake, of something that never was 'the original' in the first place.

Promising premise, and a few good actors. But the entire idea and story is lost, by a director who apparantly made a movie for herself, and not really for anyone else. Waste of time, efforts and what could have been a good story.
