I'm not ashamed to admit - I had no idea what was going on for most of this film.
The actions of the cat in targeting wives or imperial guards, the request to kill Lady Yang, some foreign invader invading a kingdom to capture her, the continual smirk on the Monk's face... things just got more confusing and convoluted at the end, leaving so much unexplained.
How much of what we were shown was from the journal, or from dialogue with the cat? Who knows.
Gore/action scenes seemed out of place. Only after I watched the film did I find out from various sources that many of the characters were actual historical figures - that context just wasn't built into the film.
It didn't help matters that the subtitles included from an official streaming source weren't timed properly with the original Chinese/Japanese dialogue - and some say the translations themselves were poor (but I'm no expert).
Overall, an unsatisfying viewing experience.
Maybe I can find a start-to-finish synopsis online somewhere that'll explain things.

I don't understand the hate.
This film might have not had a mega-budget like the later incarnations, or big name actors/actresses, or even great special effects.
But it was still better than a lot of the recent superhero films.
It was Worlds Better than a cgi snore fest "The Lost Lands", or the reboots like "Conan The Barbarian".
It sad this film was never officially released to the public.

For those of you looking to rewatch this series - it's on YouTube right now.
I went looking for where to watch it after watching "Scanners", and recognizing Loius Del Grande (before his head exploded) from this series.
It's cool watching it now, getting a snapshot of Toronto in the 1980s.
Very dated, though - some sexism and racism. I enjoy the humour, spooky visions, and occasional visual reference to the CBC.
I just learned that the leads Louie and Marge are married in real life. I feel like Louis is essentially being himself, and much of his character is based on his actual traits.... minus the ESP of course.
