I had no idea about any antecedents of this series but my newspaper gave it a plug .I shall no longer trust anything by that professional reviewer as this is just dire bilge . Is it supposed to be funny ? Is it supposed to have a halfway decent script ? Fails both counts by a chasm .How many words do i have to include before I can stop ? Badly acted with unpleasant characters with no story or drama or humour . Oh sorry ..i guess its modern ..my bad .There are terrific series and films out there from many different countries but how Netflix ended up paying for this with some of my money shows a very poor commissioning agent .Avoid.
Do not go thinking this is a substantial movie ...it isn't ..but it is a really enjoyable couple of hours telling some interlinked themes ..a really naive american visiting Oxford and its magic on a journey to maturity: an evolving tortuous love story between the very priggish lead character and another student who is far too nice for her but is infatuated : and a confliction in the lead character's mind about embracing life and/or religious belief . The film is based on a memoir by Carolyn Weber who came to Oxford in the early 1990's and the production has done a good job of recreating that era which has been mostly destroyed . The acting encompassing young relative newcomers and cameos from legendary english actors is exemplary .The music is beautifully chosen and sets the mood . Well worth seeing.
This is a lot better than the small number of negative and low rated reviews. The central character ,played beautifully by Luis Tosar , is an agent for a shadowy spanish " government " agency running several investigations .Eventually he seems to become personally disillusioned at the toxicity of the tasks he is asked to do .I do hope this is fiction as if it has any basis as dramatised truth then Spain's Government is truly awful .The support actors/actresses are very good .The visual look is really attractive and it sucks you in to follow the outcomes . I encourage those who come across this film to watch .
