Movies about people overcoming great obstacles - or movies that makes you see the world in a new way - or movies that leaves you wanting to become a better person.

Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Films with a nuanced or interesting political message.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

Film, TV or games with similar style to Tim Burtons half-abstract and sometimes gothic art style. 

Visual markers of the Burtonesque style: Environments tends to be crooked and angular and characters tend to have deformed and exaggerated bodies. Surface imperfections and unflattering details also tend to be exaggerated, making the style pretty grungy with lots of high contrast. 

This list also includes some of Tim Burton films.

On the surface these movies tell one story. But it is under the surface level the really interesting themes are being discussed. It is under the surface where directors can explore the themes that are otherwise too difficult for society to discuss.

These movies deliver their hidden messages through either allegory, subliminal messaging or metaphors.

A meta movie is either:


* self-aware
* breaks the fourth wall 
* stays somewhere in between reality and fiction
* a story in a story

A list of movies you either didn't know existed or you have been ignoring, but you would watch if someone you know recommended them to you.

Humor is subjective. These movies were picked because they stand out in the vast landscape of "comedies" out there.

This is not top list, but rather a semi-random list of the most unique comedy movies I have seen.

Movies about occult, religious or political groups hidden from away from normal society. 

In no particular order.

Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

To qualify for this list the movie has to include - to some degree - the "cosmic horror of the unknown (or unknowable)" more than gore or other elements of shock. 

The "fear and awe we feel when confronted by phenomena beyond our comprehension, whose scope extends beyond the narrow field of human affairs and boasts of cosmic significance".

Movies like Alien and The Thing does not qualify as Cosmic Horror, but rather Sci-Fi Horror. Interstellar does not qualify as it deals with real science and (for the most part) known parts of how our universe works.

Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tuva Novotny, Gina Rodriguez, and Tessa Thompson in Annihilation (2018)

Sci-Fi Movies that are not Star Wars or the MCU.
