I have to say that having watched and truly enjoyed 10+ TV show seasons of the newer Murdoch Mysteries with Yannick Bisson, Thomas Craig, Helene Joy, and Jonny Harris, I had extremely hard time getting through these older three movies ... Perhaps these movies are more true to the Victorian reality so they are darker and totally humorless, but I didn't warm up to any of the characters, and especially the inspector (Colm Meaney) put me off with his shouting and boorishness.
I still like the series and hope they will continue because there are not many comedy shows out there, unfortunately. I think Larry comes up with quite original ideas and situations in this show. I do feel bad for him because he just tries to be objective or nice or sensible, but people often misunderstand his intentions. Often they just try to take advantage. He rarely gets any satisfaction or recognition.
People should take it for what it is - funny comedy. Don't over-analyze it, it's not going to be nominated for Oscar. Just be glad that there is still some comedy left. Larry actually says things that many of us are thinking but are not comfortable saying out loud. Personally what I don't care for it's his leechy black roommate's constant use of F word in the course of all conversation.
