  • Gray-hair makeup aging effects are almost amateurish, like a high-school play

I saw this when it came out in 1956 at a drive-in in Birmingham, Alabama; and in bits and pieces on TV over the years. Just saw it again almost all the way through on TCM last night. The aging effects in the makeup are just not convincing--particularly the gray hair, especially on Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson. I probably looked similar as Prof. Metz in "The Man Who Came to Dinner" in high school in 1962. But that wasn't a multimillion dollar production.

  • I saw this first-run in 1963 at the Shades Mountain Drive-in in Birmingham, Alabama...

And just caught it again on television this morning, 1 May 2018. Fifty-five years later, it's still classic high camp. Ah, memories.... One detail that escaped me the first time is that the Philistines are all wearing World War II German helmets. I guess there were a few of them available in Italy in 1963.
