I'd never heard of this and when scrolling to find a movie it popped up.

A slow, intense, psychological character study. There are some distressing scenes (sexual assault, violence) that were acted brilliantly.

The silence throughout the movie added to the intensity and put the viewer firmly into the mindset of the main character (Martha), who was excellently portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen.

Sarah Paulson (I should add I am biased towards her as she is an exquisite human) added depth and a gentleness that was required for the character of Martha to explore her situation in the scenes between them.

The aspect and post production on this was beautiful, the lighting throughout was spot on. The way that many scenes in the 'cult' were in near darkness contrasting to the light filled space once she left gave excellent visual cues and a sense of the tumultuous emotions being felt by Martha.

Would definitely watch again to see if there were background things I've missed.

This isn't an Oscar winning performance. What it is, is fun, well executed (excuse the phrase) with Edgar Wright/Scott Pilgrim vibes all the way through. You can see where EW has sprinkled his signature visuals and references all through it from pop culture references to action in time with the (excellent) soundtrack.

Yes, there are moments that you can see where the special effects haven't quite hit the nail on the head but it's forgivable. Howden has directed this with all the intensity and crazy manic energy that is demanded to satiate the desires of the instantaneous internet devourers.

Yes, it's a fun and action packed dive into gore and violence but it mirrors society as it is now. The entitlement to 24/7 access to everything and everyone, the fact that a rabbit hole into the darkest parts of society is a literal click away and I, for one, quite enjoy that blood soaked mirror being thrown back in our faces.

Samara Weaving is excellent. I really enjoy watching Dan Radcliffe move into roles that are unexpected and more indie based too.

All in all, a movie you can watch without any major thought put into it.

This episode led me to write my first review here (this being it).

A beautiful return to the genre folded into 'real world' relatable emotion. The weird and fantastical is but a side quest in this episode, giving way to a touching story of love, loss, missed opportunity and the passage of time.

It brings the viewer into the tale, to empathise and create a bond that makes this seem less otherworldly.

The cinematography is stunning, the final scene is incredibly moving.

All in all, so much more substance than episode 3. Enjoyably so.
