I had high expectations going into the theatre. The plot and style seemed very promising: deep cultural roots mixed with modern animation in high action fight scenes. The monster designs looked cool enough.
However, Many movies have done it better. I left the theatre beyond disappointed.
This movie is insultingly cliché and painfully boring. The characters aren't developed, it's boring actions scenes and clumsy exposition that go on for too long.
The only reason I gave it a rating at all is the decent animation quality. But even that is lacking. The textures and movements make me think of cheap video game cut scenes.
I'm glad some people seem to have really enjoyed it, and I'll be the first to admit no movie is for everyone. But with so many movies available, if you don't feel compelled in the first ten minutes, turn it off and go watch something else. It doesn't get better.

The story is moving, heavy with symbolism. Funny, sad, confusing, truly the world seen by a child.
Well written script that feels like reading a novel and listening to someone's story at the same time. Very metaphor heavy.
The best part is the animation. The small things are given so much detail as to make the world feel real. The painterly style is unique and you can see how much work went into every single frame. The expressive faces, the landscapes, the complex settings, the color theory ... both artistically and technically impressive.
Worth a watch. Family friendly feel good movie with some real depth.

The concept of stop motion puppets as meta monsters is so satisfying I'm surprised it hasn't been more often.
However, for it to work the story has to be even more compelling than the visuals. Gross meaty puppets alone can't carry a whole movie.
Stop Motion is a daring movie with some genuinely disturbing moments .
However, the pacing, the acting, the sound design... it's average at best. The characters are all unlikeable, the themes are cliché.
It's not a terrible movie and some people might really enjoy it. But for those who have watched the fair share of horror, I'd recommend going straight to the animator's other work.
